This bubble waffle grilled cheese will warm you up after a chilly excursion on Hoth! Inspired by those found aboard Disney World's Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, this is how Star Wars does grilled cheese!
Bubble Waffle Inspiration
Referred to by Disney as a "Fire Melted Cheese Takeaway," this is a delicious bubble waffle with cheddar cheese. Though not typically cheesy, bubble waffles are a popular street food originating in Hong Kong. As the name suggests, a bubble waffle has raised bumps that look like bubbles.
How Do You Make a Bubble Waffle Grilled Cheese?
To make a bubble waffle grilled cheese, you need a bubble waffle maker. We found an inexpensive bubble waffle maker on Amazon called the CucinaPro Bubble Fun Mini Waffle Maker. Like a toaster, the waffle maker simply needs to be plugged into an outlet. So, no oven is required!
Like traditional bubble waffles, this recipe starts with an eggy batter. The batter we created is more akin to sourdough bread than a breakfast waffle.
The cheese is baked into the waffle, which means the cheese is not easily seen in the center. We're not sure how Disney does it, but we accomplished this by layering cheese and waffle batter like you would a lasagna! The sprinkle of cheese on the outsides give the waffle a crunchy outer texture, a baked cheese flavor and its unique, "fire melted" look.
Served with a Soup Dipper
The Starcruiser serves this dish with a "Red Fruit Soup Dipper." What "red fruit" are they referring to? Tomato, of course! Disney is great at renaming foods to fit the Star Wars realm. For example, avocado is referred to as "green pearberry."
When we asked Disney what type of soup they used, they said Campbell's Tomato Soup. Due to its orange color, we think the soup looks closest to Campbell's Slow Kettle Style Tomato and Sweet Basil Bisque. Though optional, we highly recommend dunking the waffle in your favorite tomato soup!
The "takeaway" in this waffle's name refers to its portability. No utensils required. Just pick up the waffle, dunk, and enjoy!
Equipment
- CucinaPro Bubble Fun Mini Waffle Maker
- Basting/pastry brush
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, non-aluminum
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 4 egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons whole milk
- 4 tablespoons water
- 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- Cooking spray. Preferably canola oil or other flavorless cooking spray.
- 2.5 cups freshly shredded cheddar cheese
- 30 ounces Campbell's Slow Kettle Style Tomato and Sweet Basil Bisque (for dunking)
Instructions
- Plug in the bubble waffle maker to preheat.
Make the Waffle Batter
- In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt.
- To the dry ingredients, add the egg yolks, milk and water. Whisk until just combined. The batter will have small lumps.
- Melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Whisk the butter into the batter until combined.
Make the Waffles
- Get your ingredients ready. Put a spoon and 1 tablespoon measuring spoon in the bowl of batter. Put 1 tablespoon in the bowl of shredded cheese.
- When building the waffle, you must work quickly. For this reason, we recommend studying how to build the waffle before moving onto the next steps. For visual instructions, see the "Notes" section below.
- Open the waffle maker and spray both sides with cooking spray.
- Working quickly, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of cheese evenly on the bottom waffle iron. Then, in the middle, pile: 1 tablespoon batter, 3 tablespoons cheese and another 1 tablespoon batter. Close the waffle iron and press down for 30 seconds. It's okay if excess cheese, batter or butter spill out the sides of the waffle maker (just let it be!).
- Once 30 seconds pass, open the waffle maker and evenly sprinkle another 1 tablespoon of cheese over the waffle. Gently close the waffle maker (you don't have to press down!) and cook for an additional 4 minutes. While the waffle is cooking, melt an additional 1 tablespoon butter.
- Remove the waffle from the maker. Using a basting/pastry brush, brush both sides of the waffle with melted butter. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all waffles are cooked.
- Waffles are best eaten immediately* and served with a side of tomato soup for dunking. Enjoy!
