We have a confession to make: we've never eaten a Disney breakfast skillet in the parks or resorts. Before you judge, let us defend ourselves! In the morning, the gravitation pull to the parks is strong. It's prime time to get on all our favorite rides before the wait times explode and the temperatures become unbearable.
Plus, many of these breakfast experiences are now $42 per person. Anyhow, we've thoroughly enjoyed the unique offerings at Crystal Palace and Tusker House breakfasts in the past. But for us, we are happiest to grab a Starbucks coffee and sausage, egg and cheddar sandwich on the go, if it means more attractions time.
Yet, we've ooo'ed and ahhh'd at the pictures from other guests who have had the pleasure of sitting down for an over-the-top breakfast. Especially, the ones at The Garden Grill, Whispering Canyon Cafe, and 'Ohana. We fawn over the giant breakfast assortments served family style in skillets.
Then it occurred to us: we can make this breakfast skillet at home! There's nothing we'd rather do than spend time in the kitchen conjuring up a Disney parks inspired feast for our family!
We like to make big breakfasts on the weekends! Yet, in order to make it "Disney", we had to make a few tweaks. First, we had to buy our first cast iron skillet. We opted for Lodge 12'' cast iron skillet, and it turned out to be the perfect size for our Disney breakfast skillet. Second, we needed to use our mini Mickey waffle iron. This waffle maker cooks perfect waffles, just like in Disney Parks! Just be sure to heed our special tips below on making the perfect Mickey waffle.
Disney Inspired Breakfast Skillet
Cook all components to your liking, and serve in a cast iron skillet:
- Scrambled Eggs
- Bacon
- Sausage
- Tater Tots
- Mickey Waffles (see tips for cooking, below)
- Pancake Syrup
The best part about creating our own platter at home is that we can customize the Disney breakfast skillet to our liking. For us, that means making fluffy, buttery scrambled eggs (for more on that, check out our Animal Kingdom Lodge Hot Breakfast Wrap copycat) and extra crispy bacon.
Tips for Making Mickey Waffles:
The Disney breakfast skillets at The Garden Grill, Whispering Canyon Cafe, and 'Ohana include the signature mini Mickey waffles. While it isn't at a secret that Disney uses Carbon's Golden Malted waffle mix, it may be a secret as to how they are using it.
When we used the recipe provided on the can, they didn't quite taste as good as in Disney Parks and Resorts. However, with a bit of playing around in our test kitchen, we recommend using twice the amount of butter as Carbon's Golden Malted mix calls for. The end result is a crispier, more buttery tasting waffle.
Our Disney inspired breakfast skillet recipe is modeled after The Garden Grill's Chip 'n' Dale Harvest Feast. Should you prefer to make a Disney breakfast skillet like 'Ohana, serve ham. Additionally, replace the tater tots with fried potato wedges. Should you wish to use Whispering Canyon Cafe as your inspiration, add some biscuits and sausage gravy to the mix. Also, make sure to substitute country potatoes for the tater tots. I mean, any way you slice it, your family is going to be wowed when you place this Disney breakfast skillet on the table!
